Are You Where You Hoped to Be This Year? Resetting Employment Goals in Naples, Florida

March in Naples has a different energy.
The weather shifts.
The light changes.
The season feels like a quiet reset.
And three months into the year, many families start asking themselves an honest question:
Are we where we hoped to be?
If you’re a parent or guardian of a young adult with a disability, that question can carry weight.
You may have hoped that by now:
A job search would have started
An interview would have happened
A new position would feel more stable
Confidence would be growing
And if that hasn’t happened yet, it’s easy to feel behind.
But here’s something I often share with families in our Naples office:
Progress in employment isn’t about speed. It’s about direction.
When Employment Goals Feel Stalled
In Southwest Florida, we meet many families who start the year motivated — and then life gets busy.
There are medical appointments.
School transitions.
Transportation questions.
Uncertainty about Social Security benefits.
Fear of “what if it doesn’t work out.”
So the job search gets delayed.
That’s normal.
But meaningful employment for adults with disabilities doesn’t happen by accident.
It happens through preparation.
What Preparation Really Looks Like
When people hear “job coaching,” they sometimes imagine a quick resume update.
But supported employment in our community Naples, Florida involves much more than that.
At Employment Network of Southwest Florida, preparation includes:
• Identifying strengths and interests
• Practicing interview skills
• Coordinating with Vocational Rehabilitation services
• Connecting with local employers
• Providing ongoing follow-up and workplace support
It’s not a one-time step.
It’s a structured process.
And here’s what we’ve seen over the years:
When preparation is consistent, confidence grows.
A Local Example of Progress
Phllips and Irene
Recently, we celebrated Phillip’s five-year work anniversary.
Five years.
Retention like that doesn’t happen by luck.
It happens because preparation was done thoughtfully from the beginning — and support continued after placement.
We’ve also welcomed new team members like Irene, who brought experience and readiness into her new role.
And we’ve supported young adults like Grace and Cesar as they build skills and step into new opportunities here in Southwest Florida.
Each journey looks different.
But they all started with one decision: To begin.

Why Resetting Now Makes Sense
March is not too late.
In fact, it’s the perfect time to pause and reset employment goals.
Ask yourself:
Have we taken the first step yet?
Do we know what support is available locally?
Are we trying to navigate this alone?
If the answer is yes, you don’t have to.
